The erstwhile Chola kingdom in Tamilnadu (present Tiruchi, Thanjavur and Nagai districts) which the holy river Kaveri sanctifies with its fabulous flow,  is famous for temples dedicated to The Lord Sri Mahavishnu. Of them, many shrines have been sung in praise,  by one or more of  the 12 Alwars of Sri Vaishnavism, and are grouped under the 108 Divya  Desams. Here special poojas are offered to the Lord and His consort, Sri Mahalakshmi. Many other such  temples specially attached to lord Vishnu, have sprung up in later periods and worship is going on with devotion.
